The Castro Kerfuffle

Posted by Mark on August 3, 2006

Give it a rest.

Fidel has been in power for 47 years. And if he dies, his communist party and his socialist brother Raul will remain in power. And yes, NOTHING will change. I appreciate that Cuban Americans would love to see him DEAD….but if you think the day after Fidel is buried- exiled Cubans can all return to the motherland….forget it- it’s not going to happen.

Follow along with me…..George W. decides to take this opportunity to publicly declare his support for ‘democratic reform’ in Cuba should Fidel die and Raul take control. Dubya’ urges dissident Cubans to continue their subtle push for democratic reform…to help undermine the government when they transition to Raul:

President Bush offered “full and unconditional” support Thursday for a democratic transition in Cuba, urging Cubans “to work for democratic change.”

The comments were part of Bush’s first public statement on the situation in Cuba since an ailing Fidel Castro, 79, provisionally handed power to his 75-year-old brother Raul on Monday.

“The United States is absolutely committed to supporting the Cuban people’s aspirations for democracy and freedom,” Bush said in a written statement.

And all that’s nice and sweet and oh by the way.…I sure would like a Cuban cigar….but…..SO WHAT? Do you really think the communists are going to rollover?

President Bush called on Cubans on Thursday to work for democratic change but the island’s ruling Communist Party stressed it would stay in control after Fidel Castro’s hand-over to his brother.

The Communist Party made plain on Thursday it intended to remain in control no matter what happened to Fidel Castro.

I’m sure Raul will drop the hammer if he has to…and use the military and his newfound power to do a vicious SMACKDOWN on anyone who even so much as clears his throat in disrespect.

Having said that…I stare in bewilderment and incredulity at the Media onslaught, the speculation, the never-ending rhetoric emanating from EVERYWHERE.

Neither Fidel Castro nor the brother he has designated as acting president appeared in public or the media Wednesday, deepening a prevailing impression that the 79-year-old revolutionary is wrestling with the most severe health crisis of his life.

So if Fidel is wrestling with a health crisis….why would he APPEAR in public? I can see it now……he likely has a couple of tubes shoved down his throat, he’s got bed-head, he looks like hell and he’s going to do what? Wave to the cameras and whisper hoarsely to the Cuban people:

“Hey everyone….I’m near death…but I wanted to let you know…it’s nothing- I’ve dodged the CIA and numerous death threats, I can certainly dodge an intestinal problem. But don’t forget- while I’m recovering…give generously to my henchmen.”

Yes we can REJOICE in an evil man’s death…but other than that- it’s no big deal.

Pat Robertson Says Something REALLY Stupid This Time

Posted by Mark on August 3, 2006

The trouble is that the Left agrees with this one:

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Conservative Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson said on Thursday the wave of scorching temperatures across the United States has converted him into a believer in global warming.

“We really need to address the burning of fossil fuels,” Robertson said on his “700 Club” broadcast. “It is getting hotter, and the icecaps are melting and there is a buildup of carbon dioxide in the air.”

This week the heat index, the perceived temperature based on both air temperatures and humidity, reached 115 Fahrenheit in some regions of the U.S. East Coast. The 76-year-old Robertson told viewers that was “the most convincing evidence I’ve seen on global warming in a long time.”

It’s August, folks. When the “percieved” temperature is 115 degrees Fahrenheit in February, we may have something. Pat needs a vacation…somewhere warm and sunny. The environmentalist whackos would have us believe that place is Antarctica. I’m thinkin’ not.
