The Ticking Time Bombs: Iran and the Coming Flu Pandemic

Posted by Mark on February 11, 2006

I know, I know. It’s Saturday, the Olympics are on, and no one wants a downer right now. But Iran’s whackjob is still threatening to wipe Israel off the map:

Tehran (dpa) – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Saturday that the Palestinians and “other nations” will eventually remove Israel from the region.

Addressing a mass demonstration in Tehran – one of many organized throughout Iran to commemorate the 27th anniversary of the Islamic revolution – he once again questioned the Holocaust “fairy tale”.

“We ask the West to remove what they created sixty years ago and if they do not listen to our recommendations, then the Palestinian nation and other nations will eventually do this for them,” Ahmadinejad said in a ceremony marking the 27th anniversary of the Islamic revolution.

“Do the removal of Israel before it is too late and save yourself from the fury of regional nations,” the ultra-conservative president said. He once again called the Holocaust a “fairy tale” and said Europeans have become hostages of “Zionists” in Israel.

He also accused Europeans for not allowing “neutral scholars” to investigate in Europe and make a scientific report on “the truth about the fairy tale of Holocaust.”

“How comes that insulting the prophet of Muslims worldwide is justified within the framework of press freedom, but investigating about the fairy tale Holocaust is not?” Ahmadinejad said.

And if that’s not enough to give you nightmares, how about this:

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The spread of bird flu from Asia to eastern Europe and now west Africa has increased the chance the virus will mutate and set off a pandemic, the U.N. bird flu chief said.

Dr. David Nabarro said there is no evidence yet of any change in the virus, which has killed at least 88 people since 2003.

Almost all the deaths have been linked to contact with infected poultry, but experts fear the virus could mutate into a form that spreads easily among humans, setting off a pandemic.

“Unfortunately, we cannot tell when the mutation might happen, or where it might happen, or how unpleasant the mutant virus will turn out to be,” he said in an interview. “Nevertheless, we must remain on high alert for the possibility of sustained human-to-human virus transmission and of a pandemic starting at any time.”

Now we can all go back to watching Women’s Hockey, Curling, and my personal favorite, the Luge. Have a nice day…and let’s be careful out there.

I do not understand this flu pandemic business. It hasn’t happened. It might not happen. Every time someone sees a case, the headlines go all over the world. What is going on? WHAT FLU PANDEMIC? There is none.

Steve, you ask a great question. The roots of the answer go back to 1918, and the great Spanish Flu outbreak. Current estimates are that well over 100 million people died world wide, most during the months of September and October of 1918. The fear is that such an outbreak, with the level of virulence of that strain, will come again. Medically, we are only somewhat more able to handle such a strain of virus now than in 1918.

The Great Influenza by John Barry details both the 1918 flu, and the possiblilities of a new pandemic on the horizon.

As to the Flu Pandemic information and understanding…

Though we have not seen a flu pandemic in our rememberance, rest assured there are still some who are alive now who did. In fact, our cemetaries here still have the testimony to what can happen when a pandemic occurs!

Now, look at the world closely..
    Its changed alot since 1918.
Back then, we didn’t hop flights and go around the globe and home again in one day’s time! We didn’t rub elbows, sneeze and then shake hands with someone from Taiwan then go home and hug our loved ones.
No, the world has grown closer through the years and the chances of something making it from one country to another within hours, are great!

It is true, that right now, the Avian Flu is pretty much contained within the animal populace, however, we do well to remember that the Bubonic Plague, was for a time contained to the rat population! Then.. morphed.
In our generation we’ve seen cases of Plague still being spread, in particular on the reservations and in the primarily Indian population, due to rodent droppings in the wild, that they come in contact with, or bites from rats and etc..
Not to be forgotten as well, the deer mice in NM, AZ, UT area that carried into the human populace a killer disease: Hantavirus.

There is plenty of documentation that shows the transmittal and transmutation of animal illness to the human population, THUS the scare where it involves our chicken and feathered friends, that we so often come in contact with in our daily lives.

It’s said.. an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
