What Is Wrong With These People? Peggy Noonan

Posted by Mark on June 29, 2005

A profound question from Peggy Noonan, and one both left and right has been asking alot lately. She takes a poke at everybody in Washington, so there’s plenty for both sides to groan, and smile, about.

Health Update: Blogging at a Standstill for awhile

Posted by Mark on June 29, 2005

Still fighting a bronchitis, and now an eye infection, due to a lowered immune system. Will be back as soon as I can. Sigh
Update: 6/29/05

Thanks to everyone who left comments, or sent an email. I’m doing better, though still not completely over either the eye problems or the bronchitis. It continues to limit my ability to stare at a computer screen, or be up long enough to do any serious writing.

For those who don’t know, I’ve been battling severe breathing problems since being hospitalized last August. I am alot better, but still having bouts of severe bronchitis every month. The tracheal problems that seemed to be the root cause of my problems are much improved, thanks to a wonderful speech pathologist named Cathy. Thanks to her work, I’ve been Unfortunately, the coughing from the bronchitis really screws up my back. I had surgery on my back in February after shattering a disc after a bout of bronchitis turned in to pneumonia in January.

I don’t post stuff like the above very often. Unlike politicians, I’m quite sure the world, and this blog, does NOT revolve around me. But I’ve got so many new patrons to Liberty that I felt it important for folks to understand why the bar is closed sometimes. I hope you still come back for the Muir Cartoon, even on days when the “Gone Fishing” sign is on the door though.

The Train Wreck of the SCOTUS

Posted by zaphriel on June 29, 2005

I have never seen so much waffling and bad decision making from the Supreme Court in all of my life(Or at least I can’t remember it). They have made some of the worst decisions, and all in the past few weeks.

The worst is eminent Domain.

Eminent Domain was meant to be used for the communities good, something everyone would use, like a highway, or a school. But now Simple Taxation is enough.
Now anyone who can elude to the fact that the city could make more tax revenue from their venture, on your land, can make a case, and the city can take your land from you (as long as they compensate you) and give it to the developer. This is just wrong.

Oh , of course this has happened before, but it was always in the shadows, a shady set of actions, no-one ever really heard about. Just before this horrible ruling,, we had a case just like this in Reno. A smaller casino called “The Old Reno Casino” was “condemned” by the Reno City Council and sold to a larger casino conglomerate. The worth thing about it, the property owner was “compensated” one dollar ($1.00). That my friends is the real danger, other than just loosing your home, you could loose everything, because compensation is determined by the same people that would take your home in the first place.

We can’t let this one go quietly, I am still researching, but there have to be things we can do. Most notably we can lobby our local governments to make laws that restrict their power to it’s original intent. If enough of us make a stink, they will have to listen.

Update: At least someone is trying. I sure hope they find an answer.

Update 2: Justice, sweet Justice, here are your Just Desserts.

Great Analysis of Last Week’s Supreme Court Land Grab Decision

Posted by Mark on June 29, 2005

Keith over at Voice Potential has the best analysis I’ve seen of the background of the Supreme’s decision to allow local governments to confiscate your property. Worth reading.

The real Gitmo

Posted by zaphriel on June 28, 2005

I have not posted much on this subject to date, mainly because I find it so upsetting. Forming words when I think of this whole situation just eludes me. But I have found several excellent posts on the subject that I wholeheartedly agree with.

Jim at Thinking Right has the best one to date.
You must go read what he has to say.

And then read what some cartoonists have to say too.

A Summary of the Supreme Court Decisions

Posted by Mark on June 28, 2005

I haven’t had time to read the decisions yet. I’ll hold off commenting until I do. I especially want to read Scalia’s dissenting opinion on the Ten Commandment case out of Kentucky.

OK, Enough’s enough.

Posted by zaphriel on June 27, 2005

I am dissatisfied with allot of things these days. Politically, the SCOTUS is getting on my nerves with their either down right dangerous, or very muddy decisions. I can’t for the life of me see what they were thinking on any of their recent decisions. Very alarming stuff.

Even more alarming for me however, on a personal note, is my pedestrian Artwork that I am passing off as a header. I need help. So I decided to RE-run a contest I had last month, (one that no-one entered) and up the prizes.

Grand prize will be, $50 in cash, 2 items from the Zaphriel store, a shirt with you design on it and my sincere appreciation.

If you need more details or you know of anyone who may possibly be interested, PLEASE E-mail me at Zaphriel at Gmail dot com or leave a comment.

thanks everyone.
Z.

The Balance of Power – Prison

Posted by zaphriel on June 27, 2005

or more aptly…

The War on Freedom and Liberty: an alarming movement by America’s right wing to incarcerate Liberal and Libertarian political opponents

Boy, Carl – The Gun-Toting Liberal, hosted this one, and man did he hit hard coming out the gate. You have to take a look at this one and comment, it is oddly the most divisive post we have ever put up, (Carl is always good for that), and it is not slit how you think it might be. The line is very Gray on this one. Come check it out and see what I mean.
